?The intent of this essay is to analize the case of Genie, how she became retarded,whether her mental illness was caused by nature or nurture. Also, if Genie’s rehabilitation could be possible if the case was discovered today and how hopeful we would be that the child could lead a normal life in the long term. The sad story of Genie has touched all of us. Is the nature (genes and heredity ) or the nurture(how she was raised,what Genie was raised around and her experiences or rather environment) that led her to this state? I will be discussing if it’s nature or nurture that suits to explain more her situation and if Genie could lead a normal life if looked after and treated like other normal children. There are four areas of development: physical,intellectual,emotional and social. These are build up during the human development which differentiates depending on the age. Nativists assume that the characteristics of the human species as a whole are a product of evolution and that individual differences are due to each person’s unique genetic code. Characteristics and differences that are not observable at birth, but which emerge later in life, are regarded as the product of maturation. The classic example of the way this affects our physical development are the bodily changes that occur in early adolescence at puberty. However nativists also argue that maturation governs the emergence of attachment in infancy, language acquisition and even cognitive development as a whole. The environmentalists basic assumption is that at birth the human mind is a tabula rasa (a blank slate). This theory states that people learn and acquire ideas from external forces, or the environment. Humans are born with an empty mind, having no knowledge whatsoever. People acquire ideas from the surrounding world, turning simple ideas into complex ones. This blank slate of mind starts off devoid of any knowledge, but then it is â€Å"written on† as a person lives and experiences. Therefore, a person has no identity until after birth. From this point of view psychological characteristics and behavioral differences that emerge through infancy and childhood are the result of learning. It is how you are brought up (nurture) that governs the psychologically significant aspects of child development and the concept of maturation applies only to the biological. For example, when an infant forms an attachment it is responding to the love and attention it has received, language comes from imitating the speech of others and cognitive development depends on the degree of stimulation in the environment and, more broadly, on the civilization within which the child is reared. Chomsky(1965) suggested that language is an innate faculty . That is to say that we are born with a set of rules about language in our heads which he refers to as the Universal Grammar. The universal grammar is the basis upon which all human languages build. In the case of Genie,the girl has been kept locked in a room tied to a chair and treated like an animal from the parents. She lacked emotional and social development,both very important to a child at the stages of development during the range of birth to puberty. Maslow talks about how important these things are for a human being but Genie was only given food to live. Nothing else was known to her. The quality of relashionship between parents was really poor. Bowlbys (1969) theory of attachment, which views the bond between mother and child as being an innate process that ensures survival. It suggests that children come into the world biologically pre-programmed to form attachments with others, because this will help them to survive. Genie was subject to a maternal care deprivation and the abuse she was subject to was completely inacceptable. If Genie’s case was discovered at the age of 13 today and I was a nurse,psychiatrist a social worker I would be very unsure that Genie could lead a normal life,become completely normal as other children. There is a critical time period in the humans life that is the only time one can absorb and develop language and communication skills, which could also explain why Genie never developed these critical tools. In order to learn and interact with others people need socialization. The possibilities that Genie could lead a normal life in a long term are few however,I believe she would definitely be in a much better situation if treated proppelry and she would not have entered in a state of remission. Her rehabilitation and development could be surely possible if followed by a physiotherapist or speech therapist. Banduras (1977) social learning theory is a perspective that states that people learn within a social context. It is facilitated through concepts such as modeling and observational learning. People, especially children, learn from the environment and seek acceptance from society by learning through influential models. Bandura’s bobo doll experiment (Bandura, 1961) demonstrates that if children were witnesses to an aggressive display by an adult they would imitate this aggressive behaviour when given the opportunity. Genie wouldn’t be retarded if not left locked in a room for many years which means that she wasn’t retarded at birth . The environment where Genie was kept didn’t permit her to civilize, walk or talk. She suffered from an environment where she was not nurtured positively. Skinner (1957) believed that language is learnt from other people via behavior shaping techniques. However Genie was isolated in a room where she had nobody to teach her language and she wasn’t taught how to bahave. The lack of socialization and neglect are caused by her father and the way he treated her. If genie was retarded at birth,her upbringing still should have been much different. Watson considered that the child was born as a tabula rasa, a blank slate which experience would â€Å"write on† to produce a person. In conclusion, the environment has an important influence and impact on a human being’s physical,social and emotional development. The contast between Environmentalists and nativists make us reflect on how important both genetics and environment are for human development. With regards to all the theories and argument, I am convinced that Genie can be rehabilitated to lead a normal life with the help of child psychiatric, physiotherapist speech therapists ECT. Robert Frost’s Life as a Poet Robert Lee Frost was born in San Francisco, California on March 26 of 1974 and died in Boston, Massachusetts on January 29 of 1963. Though he did not truly start publishing poems until age thirty-nine, Frost obtained four Pulitzer prizes in his writing career and was deemed one of the greatest twentieth century poets. His pastoral writing and skilled use of meter and rhythm has captured the attention of reader’s and critics for decades (Academic American, 345). Frost was very fond of nature and the beauty of things around him and illustrated this in many of his poems. A reviewer stated that Frost was â€Å"always occupied with the complicated task of simply being sincere† (Faggen, I). This statement describes the writer well in the sense that Frost’s works are very full of emotion. His use of the English language and the fact that he often seemed to be holding a little something back in his writing has made him one of the most celebrated American writers ever. Frost’s early years in life were very adverse. Frost’s father, who named the boy after his idle Robert E. Lee, met his wife in Pennsylvania while they were both teaching at Bucknell Academy. William Prescott Frost Jr. and his wife Isabelle Moodie married and moved to San Francisco where Robert was born. William Frost was a Harvard graduate and was the city editor for the San Francisco Daily Evening Post. Frost’s family moved a good amount and his father, who had serious drinking problems, died of tuberculosis in 1885 and left his mother and younger sister with very little money after burial expenses. The Frost’s returned east to live with the paternal grandparents, but soon moved to Amherst, New Hampshire to stay with his great-aunt. Shortly after this the family returned to Lawrence, Mass. where Robert was placed in school as a third grader. Frost graduated here as co-valedictorian with Elinor White. Though he was moved often and had troubles with his fat her in his young life, Frost still maintained good grades and two years before he graduated Frost had â€Å"La Noche Triste† printed in the high school bulletin. For one to live their life to the fullest, a person must have a purpose to live. One must have a reason to wake up every day and feel the sun shine or the rain fall, as cold as ice, on your skin. A law of life is necessary for one to have this sense of a calling as to why they walk the earth every solitary twenty-four hour day. A law of life is to surround yourself with people who make you a better person, inside and out. This holds accurate because the people your surround yourself with can either make you or break you, being social with others can either aid or inhibit in self-esteem, and surrounding yourself with better people can help you achieve goals through others’ positivity. Initially, there is a quote saying, â€Å"Surround yourself with only people that will lift you higher, because friends are the family you choose yourself. –Anonymous† The people who you are surrounded by can either make you a better person as a whole, or break you down until you are as low to the ground as a tiny bug, small and easily squashed. If you surround yourself with the people who will make you a better person, then you will become a better person just by association with positive, balanced people. On the contrary, if you surround yourself with people who are adverse and irrational, then you will become adverse and irrational, also just by association. For example, â€Å"Let’s say you have plans to see a friend who is lighthearted, enthusiastic and embraces life with eagerness and zest. Thinking about this friend brings a smile to your face because you know you’ll be having fun and enjoying each other’s company. After your time together, you’re excited about the rest of your day. You want to capture every moment and see all the beauty that’s about you. In order to become a better person, inside and out, then you must surround yourself with those people who possess the qualities to make you a better person. Clearly, being a social individual aids in your self-esteem, it can either make your self-esteem skyrocket or it can make it plummet. Self-esteem is no doubt a massive part of you becoming the person that you wish to be. For instance, when you are speaking to your social group of friends, and they have a positive self-image, then you too should have a somewhat positive self-image. Another example of this would be inferiority. â€Å"People who feel inferior to others always keep comparing themselves to them and they always try to find problems with themselves. So how can such friends affect your self-esteem? Simply because they got used to scanning for any possible flaws they will try to find as many flaws in you as they can (Par. 6- How Friends Affect Your Self-Esteem).† Your friends can also limit your potential as to what you can and cannot achieve. Case in point, â€Å"If you were an ambitious person who was surrounded by non-ambitious friends then most likely they will try to put you down whenever you attempt to do something that they never managed to do (Par. 7 How Friends Affect Your Self-Esteem).† Self-esteem has the ability to support or hinder your self-esteem, and self-esteem in a colossal part of the way you, and your peers see yourself. Your vision of yourself can either make you better or bitter, and through a law of life, your self-esteem should make yourself better. Subsequently, picture yourself in a race on the track outside of your school. The blistering heat is beating down on your back as you’re running through the last lap of the race and you’re in the lead. You have your group of great friends on the sidelines cheering your name as you pass the finish line! Surrounding yourself with virtuous people will help you achieve your goals through their positivity. When you surround yourself with those people who cheer you on instead of bring you down, those people will help you reach your goals, not break you down to the point where you don’t want to reach them. There are two types of people, optimists and pessimists, these types of people are on opposite sides of the spectrum. For example, â€Å"It’s just that the optimist chooses to expect happiness, success, and pleasure and as a result, that’s what they find. The pessimist chooses to replay negative thoughts which lead to negative results. (Par. 5- The Importance Of Surrounding Yourself w/ Positive People).† Adjoining yourself with optimistic people will help you reach the success, not make you feel that you can’t, that’s what a pessimist would do. For instance, if you’re around people with an attitude of being too good to reach a goal, you will not reach the goal, but if you’re around people who will be your personal cheerleaders, than you’ll most likely get the desired result. Surrounding yourself with the people who are virtuous and optimistic, then they will aid you in reaching your goals, long or short-term. Conclusively, to live a life worth living, you must have a law of life to follow. In this case, a law of life is to surround yourself with the people who bring out the best in you, and these people will make you the best you, you can be. To surround yourself with the kinds of people that will make you better, not bitter these people must possess the qualities of the people your surround yourself with can either make you or break you, being social with others can either aid or inhibit in self-esteem, and surrounding yourself with better people can help you achieve goals through others’ positivity.
