Target Corporation Essay Target Corporation is a powerful retail brand. It has a reputation for value for money, convenience and a wide range of products all in one store. Target Corporation is the third-largest general merchandise retailer in the United States. Target has three main competitors which is Wal-Mart, Costco, and K-Mart. Wal-Mart is the largest retail chain in the world, its mission is â€Å"Always low-prices!†Costco is the largest wholesale club operator in the U. S. K-Mart is the number three discount retailer in the U.S. As the November meeting approaches, CFO Doug Scovanner is faced with the problem of choosing which of the five controversial projects available to accept. So this case is to evaluate each of the projects based upon two major criteria. The first is determining the firm’s financial motives by major criteria. The first is determining the firm’s financial motives by quantifying the projected value added to the firm and the risk associated with each project. When determining to accept or reject projects based on adding value, the instruments we can use are NPV and the IRR. As we consider capital constraint problems, we also use the Profitability Index in order to determine which projects add the most value per dollar spent. Some thing we need to notice are projected sales figures, speculated variations in these sales projections, and the impact that adding a new store into the trade area has on the sales of surrounding stores. The second criterion involved in analyzing the projects is determining the firm’s business motives. This deals with recognizing Target’s corporate goals and mission and how they accomplish this through their business strategy. Two of the greatest aspects of their strategy are a high value on brand awareness and a defined target market of college educated women with a family. The ultimate goal, therefore, is finding a healthy balance between these two criteria by integrating as much of Target’s business strategy into the fundamental financial goals of wealth maximization shared by all firms. Robert Frost’s Life as a Poet Robert Lee Frost was born in San Francisco, California on March 26 of 1974 and died in Boston, Massachusetts on January 29 of 1963. Though he did not truly start publishing poems until age thirty-nine, Frost obtained four Pulitzer prizes in his writing career and was deemed one of the greatest twentieth century poets. His pastoral writing and skilled use of meter and rhythm has captured the attention of reader’s and critics for decades (Academic American, 345). Frost was very fond of nature and the beauty of things around him and illustrated this in many of his poems. A reviewer stated that Frost was â€Å"always occupied with the complicated task of simply being sincere† (Faggen, I). This statement describes the writer well in the sense that Frost’s works are very full of emotion. His use of the English language and the fact that he often seemed to be holding a little something back in his writing has made him one of the most celebrated American writers ever. Frost’s early years in life were very adverse. Frost’s father, who named the boy after his idle Robert E. Lee, met his wife in Pennsylvania while they were both teaching at Bucknell Academy. William Prescott Frost Jr. and his wife Isabelle Moodie married and moved to San Francisco where Robert was born. William Frost was a Harvard graduate and was the city editor for the San Francisco Daily Evening Post. Frost’s family moved a good amount and his father, who had serious drinking problems, died of tuberculosis in 1885 and left his mother and younger sister with very little money after burial expenses. The Frost’s returned east to live with the paternal grandparents, but soon moved to Amherst, New Hampshire to stay with his great-aunt. Shortly after this the family returned to Lawrence, Mass. where Robert was placed in school as a third grader. Frost graduated here as co-valedictorian with Elinor White. Though he was moved often and had troubles with his fat her in his young life, Frost still maintained good grades and two years before he graduated Frost had â€Å"La Noche Triste† printed in the high school bulletin. This was his first printed poem. Two years later Frost graduated and read a speech titled â€Å"A Monument to After-Thought Unveiled† (Faggen, xi). This marked the end of Frost’s childhood and the beginning of his adulthood and the many decisions that came with it. For one to live their life to the fullest, a person must have a purpose to live. One must have a reason to wake up every day and feel the sun shine or the rain fall, as cold as ice, on your skin. A law of life is necessary for one to have this sense of a calling as to why they walk the earth every solitary twenty-four hour day. A law of life is to surround yourself with people who make you a better person, inside and out. This holds accurate because the people your surround yourself with can either make you or break you, being social with others can either aid or inhibit in self-esteem, and surrounding yourself with better people can help you achieve goals through others’ positivity. Initially, there is a quote saying, â€Å"Surround yourself with only people that will lift you higher, because friends are the family you choose yourself. –Anonymous† The people who you are surrounded by can either make you a better person as a whole, or break you down until you are as low to the ground as a tiny bug, small and easily squashed. If you surround yourself with the people who will make you a better person, then you will become a better person just by association with positive, balanced people. On the contrary, if you surround yourself with people who are adverse and irrational, then you will become adverse and irrational, also just by association. For example, â€Å"Let’s say you have plans to see a friend who is lighthearted, enthusiastic and embraces life with eagerness and zest. Thinking about this friend brings a smile to your face because you know you’ll be having fun and enjoying each other’s company. After your time together, you’re excited about the rest of your day. You want to capture every moment and see all the beauty that’s about you. Your friend may not have intentionally tried to alter your thinking, but her positive approach and attitude was infectious (Par.2-The Importance of Surrounding Yourself w/ Good People).† The people who you let be in your company ultimately affect you as a person, and this can either make you a better person or a worse person. Another example of this would be if you’re in a group of people with a less than stellar attitude, eventually, you will become a less than stellar person. In order to become a better person, inside and out, then you must surround yourself with those people who possess the qualities to make you a better person. Clearly, being a social individual aids in your self-esteem, it can either make your self-esteem skyrocket or it can make it plummet. Self-esteem is no doubt a massive part of you becoming the person that you wish to be. For instance, when you are speaking to your social group of friends, and they have a positive self-image, then you too should have a somewhat positive self-image. Another example of this would be inferiority. â€Å"People who feel inferior to others always keep comparing themselves to them and they always try to find problems with themselves. So how can such friends affect your self-esteem? Simply because they got used to scanning for any possible flaws they will try to find as many flaws in you as they can (Par. 6- How Friends Affect Your Self-Esteem).† Your friends can also limit your potential as to what you can and cannot achieve. Case in point, â€Å"If you were an ambitious person who was surrounded by non-ambitious friends then most likely they will try to put you down whenever you attempt to do something that they never managed to do (Par. 7 How Friends Affect Your Self-Esteem).† Self-esteem has the ability to support or hinder your self-esteem, and self-esteem in a colossal part of the way you, and your peers see yourself. Your vision of yourself can either make you better or bitter, and through a law of life, your self-esteem should make yourself better. Subsequently, picture yourself in a race on the track outside of your school. The blistering heat is beating down on your back as you’re running through the last lap of the race and you’re in the lead. You have your group of great friends on the sidelines cheering your name as you pass the finish line! Surrounding yourself with virtuous people will help you achieve your goals through their positivity. When you surround yourself with those people who cheer you on instead of bring you down, those people will help you reach your goals, not break you down to the point where you don’t want to reach them. There are two types of people, optimists and pessimists, these types of people are on opposite sides of the spectrum. For example, â€Å"It’s just that the optimist chooses to expect happiness, success, and pleasure and as a result, that’s what they find. The pessimist chooses to replay negative thoughts which lead to negative results. (Par. 5- The Importance Of Surrounding Yourself w/ Positive People).† Adjoining yourself with optimistic people will help you reach the success, not make you feel that you can’t, that’s what a pessimist would do. For instance, if you’re around people with an attitude of being too good to reach a goal, you will not reach the goal, but if you’re around people who will be your personal cheerleaders, than you’ll most likely get the desired result. Surrounding yourself with the people who are virtuous and optimistic, then they will aid you in reaching your goals, long or short-term. Conclusively, to live a life worth living, you must have a law of life to follow. In this case, a law of life is to surround yourself with the people who bring out the best in you, and these people will make you the best you, you can be. To surround yourself with the kinds of people that will make you better, not bitter these people must possess the qualities of the people your surround yourself with can either make you or break you, being social with others can either aid or inhibit in self-esteem, and surrounding yourself with better people can help you achieve goals through others’ positivity. How does Philip Larkin explore the role of women in at least two poems you have studied? Philip Larkin’s relationships with women are often scrutinized in the media. He was often accused of misogyny and never married, though had several prominent relationships. Having once said, â€Å"Sex means nothing – just the moment of ecstasy, that flares and dies in minutes†, one could infer that Larkin had a dismissive attitude towards sexual relationships. Two poems from the Whitsun Weddings collection, Wild Oats (a recount of a man’s encounters with two women) and Sunny Prestatyn, (the description of the defacement of a poster) explore different attitudes towards women, and I will be drawing also from A Study of Reading Habits. The further description of a hotel â€Å"expanding from her thighs†, presents to the reader that the woman is being sexualized. The second stanza, describing the defac ement of the poster in the period of a fortnight, including being made â€Å"snaggle-toothed and boss-eyed†, ultimately implies that beauty is transitory. In the third stanza, there is the actual removal of the poster, leaving â€Å"only a hand and some blue†. This signifies that the poster was trivial and can be physically broken. Finally, the last line describes another poster, â€Å"Fight Cancer†, being put up which further trivialises the poster, as it was replaced so easily. The dark message created is that injustice against women can be easily looked over. Larkin demonstrates this also in A Study of Reading Habits; the women are broken up like â€Å"meringues†. Women are presented as being easily disposable, as food is. Another similarity in the imagery between these two poems is the implication of women’s innocence; white is projected into the reader’s mind by the meringues, and again in Sunny Prestatyn by the â€Å"tautened white satin† worn by the woman. The rhyming of â€Å"white satin† and â€Å"Prestatyn† put the town in a positive light, but also creates a gentle rhythm, juxtaposed by the dark tone created by the same rhythm in the following stanzas.
